Out-of hours access

Electronic access to e-mail, the Trust’s Intranet and the wider Internet for health information, will be provided outside these core hours via 6 PCs in the Library’s annex in the Cardiac Education Centre.

The ‘Library and Reading Area’ in the Cardiac Education Centre will therefore be available from 6 pm until 8.30 am Monday to Thursday and from 5.30 pm Friday through the weekend to 8.30 am on Monday.

Swipe Card Access to the Cardiac Education Centre will be available using Trust ID badges.  The Library door will  be unlocked.

The entrance to the Cardiac Centre has facilities for the purchase and consumption of cold drinks.

  • Membership of the Library is open to:
    All staff employed by the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, staff employed by Blackpool Primary Care Trust, North Lancashire Primary Care Trust, and staff working across the Fylde Coast employed by Lancashire Care Trust. Students on placement across the Fylde Coast from - University of Manchester, University of Central Lancashire, Lancaster University, and St Martin's College.
  • Registration:
    Any member of staff or student on placement who wishes to use the Library Service must complete a registration form. A Trust or University Identification Badge is required along with proof of home address.
  • Journals:
    The Library subscribes to a range of print and electronic journals. Print journals may not be borrowed unless by special arrangement with Library staff.
  • Electronic journals:
    An increasing number of journals are available in electronic format. Please ask Library staff for details and instructions on how to access them.
  • Internet access:
    The Library has two computer suites. One suite has access to the Trust Intranet, the NHSnet and Internet. The second suite has access to the University of Central Lancashire's network and Internet. When a computer suite is booked for a training session, NHSnet connected computers are available elsewhere in the library.
  • Word processing:
    Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint are available in the computer suites and individual library computers. Printing is charged at 5p per page.
  • Books:
    The Library has a wide range of medical, nursing and multi-disciplinary health care books and reports. Suggestions for Purchase are always welcome.
  • Borrowing procedure:
    All registered users are entitled to borrow books. The loan period is four weeks. Up to six books may be borrowed by Trust staff. The loan period may be extended by telephoning the Library. Books cannot be borrowed without producing a library card. Students on placement please contact Library staff for details of borrowing and renewing procedures. Please note that fines are incurred for material that is overdue for return.
  • Returning material:
    A "book return" box is available within the Education Centre for the return of material when the library is closed.
  • Inter Library Loans:
    Books and copies of journal articles not held in the library may be requested. A small charge is payable for this service. University of Manchester and University of Central Lancashire students can obtain books from their University Libraries free of charge. Please ask staff for details when placing your request.
  • Photocopying:
    The Library has two photocopiers for self-service photocopying. Copying may be charged to your department. The Library displays guidelines for copying.

    Copyright Changes

    Due to recent changes in NHS policy there are new rules which affect the way in which you are entitled to reproduce copyright material such as books, reports, magazines and journals.

    Before making any copies of copyright material please access this document for guidance.

    It is a legal responsibility of both the Trust and the individual to ensure that the Copyright Law is not infringed.
