What is ATHENS?
Athens is an access management system which controls access to resources on the internet that have been purchased for the use of the 'NHS Family' in England.
The NHS Family includes all:
- NHS staff
- Dental staff in practices providing an NHS service
- Hospice and other healthcare staff working with the NHS providing services to NHS patients which are free at the point of delivery
- Specialist nurses working within the NHS such as Marie Curie and Macmillan nurses
- Social services staff with a healthcare remit employed by local authorities and statutory bodies working in support of, or in conjunction with, the NHS
- Staff in recognised health and social care charities providing services to NHS patients which are free at the point of delivery
- MOD clinicians and nurses
- HMP clinicians and nurses
- Certain university employees who deliver information training to NHS (applications considered on an individual basis)
- Students in HE and FE when on clinical placement in the NHS

How do I obtain an Athens password?
You can register on-line via the link provided or you can visit the library, where staff will help you to complete the registration process.
You must have a valid e-mail address in order to register. This can be an NHS e-mail address or you can use your home e-mail.
