The Ophthalmic Day Case Unit is a specialist nurse-led unit that deals specifically with patients who require eye surgery and investigations into eye disorders on a day case basis. (A day case patient is someone who will be in hospital for only the length of their operation and 30mins or longer for their recuperation).
Nursing staff on the unit are specifically trained in Ophthalmology and will carry out most of the necessary tests and investigations before and after procedures. Highly skilled doctors carry out all surgical procedures.
Information for all procedures is normally given to patients verbally and in a booklet when you are listed for surgery or if you have a pre-operative assessment.
