Care of the Older Person

Welcome to the Care for the Older Person area of the website.

Although older adults are cared for throughout all the Trust's hospitals - older adults occupy approximately two thirds of NHS beds - Wards 25 and 26 at Blackpool Victoria Hospital have been designated as specialising in Caring for Older People with Acute medical needs. The aims of the wards are to promote and extend healthy active life of this age group and to reduce frailty and dependency.

The two wards form part of the medical directorate, with Ward 25 caring for 25 men (and occasionally women in side rooms) and Ward 26 caring for 25 women (and occasionally men in side rooms).

Patients admitted to the wards suffer from a wide range of acute medical problems and often present with multiple diseases or conditions. Not all patients are discharged home directly from the wards but may be referred to one of the Trust's community hospitals - such as Rossall, Bispham or Clifton- for a period of rehabilitation.
